Dental care is an important part of taking care of your overall health.

We know that you may have questions about your dental coverage. You have two dental plans that include separate benefits to keep you healthy. You have one plan that includes comprehensive dental coverage, such as dental exams and teeth cleanings. Then you have a supplemental plan that includes restorative dental coverage.

Questions? We’re here to break it down for you. Let's get started!

You have two separate dental plans: Medi-Cal Dental and Delta Dental.

Medi-Cal Dental

  • Medi-Cal Dental covers
    • Dental exams (every 12 months)
    • Teeth cleaning (every 12 months)
    • Scaling and root planning
    • Fluoride varnish (every 12 months)
    • X-rays
    • Fillings
    • Crowns
    • Root canals
    • Partial and full dentures
    • Denture relines
    • Tooth removal
    • Emergency services

  • You were automatically assigned to a dentist that takes both of your plans (Medi-Cal FFS Dental and Delta Dental) and can
cover services from both. However, you can continue seeing your current Medi-Cal FFS Dentist if you do not need restorative services from a Delta Dental Dentist.
  • You should have received a welcome letter from Wellcare in the mail that includes information about your assigned dentist.
  • You can also call 855-643-8515 to get your assigned dentist’s contact information.
  • If you are in LA or Sacramento County, you may have Medi-Cal Dental Managed Care (DMC). Find contact information for your Medi-Cal DMC plan.

  • Always make sure to bring both your Medi-Cal Benefits Identification Card (BIC) and your Delta Dental ID cards to every dental visit.

  • If you did not receive your BIC or it is lost orstolen, you may ask for a BIC from your county social services office.
    • If your BIC is stolen, you must tell your local police and your county social services office. You should give as much information about the theft as possible.
  • If you are issued a new card, your old card will no longer be valid. Please contact your local county office here.

  • If it is your first dental visit, you may have a full set of x-rays taken of your teeth and you will be asked about your dental history. The dentist will look for problems with your gums and teeth and recommend preventive or restorative services. Preventive services, such as fluoride treatments, protect your teeth from disease. Restorative services fix teeth, such as a crown on a cracked or chipped tooth or fillings where there is tooth decay.
  • The dentist may perform an exam and then present a plan for ongoing treatment, if necessary. They should explain treatment alternatives, benefits, risks and costs.

  • Covered services are covered at little to no cost to keep you and your smile healthy. You also have the right to ask for only services covered by Medi-Cal.
  • Your dental provider must give you a written or electronic treatment plan. The plan will show if Medi-Cal covers a different, medically necessary service.

  • Your dental provider may charge you for services if you choose to have treatment that is not covered by Medi-Cal Dental.

  • If you live in Sacramento or Los Angeles counties, you may get dental benefits through a Dental Managed Care (DMC) plan.
Covered services include fillings, root canal treatments, tooth extractions, and more.
  • If you want more information about dental plans, or want to change dental plans, contact Health Care Options at 1-800-430-4263 (TTY users call 1-800-430- 7077), Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The call is free. Dental Managed Care contacts are also available here.
